A woman born in Korea navigates her way through love, war, politics and national loyalties to become a powerful empress in China's Yuan dynasty and Saimdang, 'Memoir of Colors'. The front of the yellow/orange 50,000 won banknote shows the portrait of Shin Saimdang (1504-1551). She was an artist, writer, calligraphist, and poet of the Joseon Dynasty, and was the mother of the Confucian scholar Yi I, who is portrayed on the 5,000 won banknote.

I live in Grass Valley, CA, where Lola spent 2 years. Her small house (CA Historical Monument #292) is now owned by the city, and has been a visitor's center, as well as other public uses. There's also a mural of her close to the downtown. She certainly was an exotic resident to our rugged mining town.
